What Causes Stabbing Pain In The Middle Of The Chest?

I keep getting sharp stabbing pain in the middle of my chest under my ribs which goes right up to my lower teeth. I had it for hours last night. I still have it today. What could it be? I have had it quite a few times in the past but it has never still been there the next day. I sometimes get palpitations and it sometimes feels like my heart has missed a beat.
