Any amount of bleeding during pregnancy is not a good sign.
At 17 weeks of pregnancy, even though it is a small amount of bleeding, you should not neglect it. Please report to your obstetrician ASAP.
If the placenta is low lying, in front of the baby, it starts getting separated and will cause bleeding. This is a very serious condition. The diagnosis can be conformed by ultrasonography which will show the exact position of the placenta.
You may have to stay in the hospital depending up on the underlying cause for this bleeding.
Your immediate reporting to the obstetrician is necessary.
