Our grandson is turning 3 and is not talking. He is enrolled in our county early intervention program and participates in a hour of speech therapy a week but he still has a very limited vocabulary and only talks in one word sentences - usually only in response to a request (What color is the truck? Red). The few words he uses are garbled or missing vowels. Blue is boo. Drink is onk. Black is ack. What seems to surprise his therapists is that he is obviously intelligent and not delayed in any other area of development. His hearing tests show he is able to hear (though some tests have shown some levels of loss). Are their disorders that only affect speech that the therapists and doctors have not considered? Do we need to see a specialist other than the ENT and speech therapists? Thanks
Hello dear, After going through your history, I believe you have some genuine concern and I will try to help you out of this situation.
The linguistic development in a child with normal hearing is essentially dependent upon the environment the child lives in. Over protective guardians, who watch every step of their beloved baby do not feel that the child should be given space to analyse and learn from situations. Secondly when the child is not exposed to outer world, it is difficult to learn new thing.
I can share my personal experience with you.My baby at the age of 2.5 was not talking much, but when I let her go to the play school, within one month she started singing rhymes whatever she knew. Again when i shifted to a different city, my neighbour said after some days that her son started talking properly after he started playing with my daughter.
So my advice to judge your behavior to your child and act accordingly.
I hope I could solve your query. Please do not hesitate to clarify more doubts for the same situation.
Thank you for the way you are in my life. Dr Ipsit Panda
