What Causes Soreness And Cracking Sound In Knees?

Hi Dr. Rynne, I have had sore knees for some time. The main problem is soreness, a cracking sound when I stand up and difficulty going up and down stairs. When going down stairs something in my right knee feels like it is stretching across the knee. What could this be? Thanks, George

Soreness and cracking sound in knee should be evaluated as:

1. Osteoarthritis: check with knee X-ray
2. Could be effusion: check with orthopedic surgeon for knee aspiration.
3.One should check with routine investigations like: Hb%, WBC,ESR,RA Test
4. Use walking stick to reduce the load on affected knee.
5. Avoid climbing stairs, sitting on floor as faf as possible.
6. Weight redicton will work wonders (if obese)
7. Use the least irritant drug and take the drugs after meals, and stop the drug immediately,if epigastric pain or burning occurs.
