What Causes Sore Throat, difficulty In Swallowing And Fever?

my 20 year old college sophomore grandson just called, he has had fever since 2 days, swollen and purple gums, sore throat, and can hardly eat, also a headache at times. Will he get the right help at the Univ. clinic? What could his problem be? Should he see a medical doctor?
