What Causes Sore Throat In The Mornings On Withdrawal From Smoking Cannabis?

I have recently quit smoking cannabis. After being a daily smoker, about 3x a day, I tapered off and haven t smoked for 5 days now. Every morning I wake up stopped up with a sore throat. Is this my respiratory system cleansing itself? Or something else?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of sore throat in the mornings on withdrawal from smoking cannabis which is very normal and major cause for this due to nicotine which has an effect on stomach acid production and the sudden stoppage of smoking can causes a lot of acid reflux that comes up to the throat and causes dry cough, sore throat and excessive throat clearing. I would suggest you to slowly and gradually wean away from smoking. Take antacid in the morning to avoid excessive acid production. Maintain hygiene of oral cavity. Rinse with chlorhexidine mouthwash. Switch to nicotine gums or patches first and then stop. If you noticing any swelling in tongue or oral cavity visit ENT specialist once and get it examined. Avoid sharp, spicy and oily food substances. Take diet rich in fruits and multivitamins. Do warm saline and betadine gargles.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
