What Causes Sore Throat And Post Nasal Drip?

Hi, I have a sore throat which began 9 days ago. On the second and third day I also had tenderness in my neck. Maybe swollen glands? I began having symptoms in my sinuses also. I was seen at the urgent care at my PVP office. There they did a quick strep and it was negative. I was told I have an upper respiratory infection. A few days later I followed up with my PCP because my throat was really hurting. I ve never had a sore throat this bad that I can recall. My symptoms at this point were sore throat which hurts to swallow saliva and also when sticking my tongue out. A productive cough a night laying down and in the morning that brought up yellowish green sputum. I thought a sinus infection with post nasal drip? My PCP did not do another strep test. She listened to my lungs which were clear. Sent me for a chest xray to see if I have pneumonia, but the xray was clear, no pneumonia. She prescribed doxycycline for bronchitis. That was two days ago. I have not started the antibiotic yet because I have to avoid sunlight and I had planned outings with my kids. My sinus are feeling better. I think there is still post nasal drip, but mild. I didn t cough up as much this morning as I have been. However, my throat is killing me! What could be causing this?

Hi
Welcome to Health care magic.

I went through the history you have provided here. It seems from the history that you are having sore throat and post nasal drip. This indicates upper respiratory tract infection. The reason for post nasal drip is the persistence of infection. Since your X-rays are clear, lungs are not affected hence no need to worry. The treatment advised by your doctor is in right direction, do continue it.

Hope this is helpful to you.
Wishing you a good health and speedy recovery.
