What Causes Sore Throat And Earache?

about 5 days ago, my right ear was hurting, like an ear infection and now my throat is very painful when I swallow. I went to my Dr. on Tuesday and she feels that it is a viral infection and didn t give me anything to help get me over this. She did a strep test that came back negative. I have missed work all week, it is very painful to swallow and the pain goes into the ear.

Hello,

As per your complain it seems that you are suffering from ear and throat infection and can be due to viral infection with a secondary bacterial infection. Pain in ears also can be a radiating pain from infected throat, rather it can also be due to ear infection, and secondary to throat infection as the ear and throat are connected via Eustachian tube. For confirmation consult an otolaryngologist or an ENT expert and get evaluated. He can do investigations like throat swab culture can help in diagnosis.

You can be advised:
• Antibiotics like Augmentin or Azithromycin to resolve the infection.
• Anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can be taken to relive pain. Doing warm saline gargles, steam inhalation and using a humidifier in your room can be very much relieving.
• You can also suck throat lozenges to soothe the throat.
• Gargle with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine.
• Gargle with antiseptic solution like few drops of betadine in water.
• Chew vitamin C pellets to boost up the immunity.
• Avoid spicy and chilled foods.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
