What Causes Sore Lump Behind Ear?

It s been a year now I ve had a small lump behind my left ear, it is really sore and quite painful so much so that I can t sleep on that side. In the past year or 2 I find the pain comes and goes. I have no flu like symptoms but I have had a bad cough for 3 months now should I be worried?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, small lump behind the ear is usually due to a lymph node or a cyst but a tender swelling will most likely be due to a tender lymph node although an infected cyst can also be tender. But a year long tender swelling will usually be occasionally tender. Please see an ENT and get an ENT examination done to rule out any infective focus in the vicinity which usually is the reason for a tender lymphadenopathy. If still inconclusive, go for an FNAC. Regards
