Hello,
There are sleep studies that will be required to determine if you have sleep apnea. You should have a physical with your general doctor. The doctor will prescribe tests for you. Questions will be asked about your sleeping habits and if you fall asleep during the day. There are sleep study centers or units in hospitals. Your sleep pattern and breathing will be monitored over night. If you stop breathing multiple times, this will be recorded. This is a serious condition and not simple snoring due to congestion or nasal constriction. If your diagnosis is related to excess tissue in the back of the throat, the tissue could be reduced to eliminate or reduce snoring. Reduce irritants to the throat. This includes smoking and alcohol. Mild sleep apnea can be treated with a mouth device which can reposition your jaw and keep the airway open rather than collapsing. Stress is put on the heart. Steps to correct this chronic and more severe sleep apnea include wearing a mask attached to a CPAP machine at night. These machines are portable and taken on overnight trips. Your health conditions will be studied to determine contributing factors such as excess weight. This excess pressure when lying down causes difficulty with lung function with a lack of air entering and breathing is interrupted. The CPAP machine forces air into the lungs making it easier to keep breathing. Added weight on your chest is a common condition where a weight loss program and possible surgeries may be recommended. A doctor specializing in bariatric surgery would be required.
