Hello
Shortness of breath , family history of asthma, borderline diabetes, familial history of heart ailment, obesity ,all these are an indication of these possibilities , these include:
1 Asthmatic allergic bronchitis ,as humidity and some allergen like dust , mite , pollen , pests , fumes , ,obesity are predisposing factors of asthma.
Since your mother is also having asthma ,so you may have initial stage.
2 Although obesity in few person produces shortness of breath ,so be careful about that.
3 Anemia ,may be the another reason of such shortness of breath particularly in obese patient.
So in my opinion consult a physician and get his opinion ( 2nd one ) as physical examination is important in your case.
However, steam inhalation and hot coffee also provide instant relief because they act as bronchodilator.
Good luck.
