What Causes Shortness Of Breath Despite A Normal EKG Report?
This is concerning my Father who is 87 years old. He has starting having shortness of breath, probably been going on 6 months. He is very active, working in the yard and was walking about 5 miles a day. But since this has started he gets out of breath so doesn t walk as much. He has seen a Cardiologist who did an EKG and a nuclear stress test but nothing showed up. Where do we go from here?
If the cardiologist ruled out heart related causes then you may want to consider ruling out lung related causes or systemic conditions such as anemia or other chronic illnesses. Imaging of the chest along with blood tests such as complete blood count, ESR (looks for inflammation in the body), liver and kidney function tests (though these would not be firstline), can be done.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
