What Causes Severe Pain And Swelling In Ankles?

I have severe pain and swelling in both ankles. The swelling goes up my shin and they have a brownish discoloration that has recently started. In the morning I can t walk without using the assistance of a cane because the pain is overwhelming. I had multi level spinal fusion surgery in 2014 and I have never recovered from the pre-op shape that I was in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bilateral ankle selling could be caused by a number of medical conditions.Some possible causes may include:
-Heart pathologies
-Renal pathologies
-Liver problems
-Vessel compresson
-Soft tissue infections
And so many others.
When ankles swell for too long, colour change from poor blood supply is possible and may explain the colour change you describe.
No mater the cause, ankle swelling should always be investigated.I will suggest you see the Doctor for examination and work-ups.Tests like an ECG, chest x ray, liver and renal function tests, full blood count may be helpful.
Full recovery after a spinal surgery may not be achieved easily.However, you may be able to carry out most of your daily activities with ease.I will suggest you try the following while waiting for an etiologic treatment from your Doctor:
-Rest well
-Reduce salt intake
-Elevate legs while lying
-Take a pain/anti-inflammatory drug like aceclofenac
-You may take a diuretic like furosemide to reduce fluid retention
