What Causes Severe Pain Above Knee?

My husband is having severe pain just above his knee, right leg. This knee is a replacement. The pain started in his hip and has settled in knee. His dr. xrayed it but has never called back to give any info. The dr. just gives him pain pills and muscle relaxers. He has Medicare Advantage insurance with D only. He cannot find a back doctor who takes his insurance. What can we do?
