What Causes Severe Heartburns?

I have having what seems like heartburn but is in the center of my chest, just below the breasts and above or high part of the stomach. I am 62 yo female. Pain seems like a giant hand is wrapped around my liver and squeezing. how should I pursue diagnosis or relief?

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
It seems that you are having Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) whose main feature is heartburn .Sometimes patient may have also chest pain as you described,though less common.The dominant clinical strategy is of empirical treatment with acid inhibitors(e.g. pantoprazole,raniditine etc).
Further evaluation like Esophago-gastroduodenoscopy is reserved for those who fail to respond. However since you have chest pain, cardiac disease must be carefully considered at your age. As initial investigation ECG is indicated.
