What Causes Severe Earache?

All of a sudden while at work about one hour ago my right ear has started hurting like an ache. Feels like it is down inside the canal. No pain when I swallow or when I turn my head. Could this be an ear infection? It started very suddenly. Anything over the counter that I can do?
