What Causes Severe Cough With Sputum While On Metformin?

I am a type 2 Diabetic. One of the medications I know I take is Metformin. I ve been coughing up a clear white phlegm for a long time during the day about 3 times or more. I ve started to drink water but it doesn t go away but it is diminished some. What do you think is the cause and what should I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

This is not a known side effect of metformin but may be related to another cause.

The causes of a persistent cough include:(1) post nasal drip - this is the most common reason found and it is treated with antihistamine and decongestants . Some persons are not aware of the drip itself
These are over the counter medications.
If there is no improvement a nasal spray can be added

(2) reflux - some persons may have a combination of reflux and post nasal drip
(3)asthma

I hope this helps
