What Causes Severe And Progressive Lower Abdomen Pain?

I have had sharp stomach pains for the past week. The pains are in my upper stomach until I eat a meal, then the pain seems to follow the digestive process down through my lower abdomen. I have no stomach upset, vomiting, or diarrhea, and I have normal bowel movements. This morning the pain awakened me at about 3:00 am, but when I got up around 5:00 and had breakfast, it lessened, then moved to my lower abdomen as the day progressed. The pain has not been severe, during the day, as I was distracted with other things. I am noticing the pain growing in my upper stomach this evening. Since this pain has continued for about 4 days, I am concerned, even though I have no other symptoms. I am 70 years old, watch my diet and exercise daily. Should I give this more time, are there specific symptoms I should be looking for? I am generally very healthy and hate to go to the clinic when there doesn t appear to be something more tangible wrong.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted your history of having pain for past week in the upper abdomen which continues on as if to follow the intestinal tract to reach the lower abdomen.
There is no diarrhea, vomiting or any other symptoms. Have normal bowel movements.
I would advise you the following:
Tests of stool as there can be sub-acute intestinal infection.
If present a small course of an antibiotic will solve the problem.
If the stool is normal, the problem can be related to stress or anxiety.
Try activated charcoal tablets, prebiotics and probiotic, PPI like Omeprazole, antacid and Domperidone.
Rarely, if the problem persists you may need an opinion, clinical evaluation and examination and other investigations like colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy.
