What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain?

I am a 42 y/o female, still having a monthly menses. For the last few days I have been experiencing a sudden sharp stabbing pain, that comes on at least once an hour, on the right side of where my pubic bone is. What can caause this? The pain hurts so bad when it comes on that it takes my breath and makes me light headed and sometimes nauseated.

Thank you,

Wende

Hi Wende.
Thanks for your query in HCM. I am Dr.Aliem, and I am pleased to answer your query.
The site and nature of your pain suggests that it may be ureteric colic, i.e pain that occurs due to obstruction of your urinary passage, usually by a stone. I suggest you to consult your doctor, who may order an Ultrasound scan of your abdomen and KUB (Kidney/Ureter and Bladder). This will pick up even small stone(s) if present, and will be helpful in excluding other common causes of your pain. If confirmed, treatment of kidney stone disease will be based on the size and site of it. In the mean time, I suggest you to take plenty of water. This helps you to flush your urinary passages and clear it off of pathogens. Hope this helps.
