What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain On Coughing And Sneezing?

I am a male at 44yrs old. In the last 6 months I have had severe pain in my lower abdominal when I cough, sneeze, or strain. I believed it to be a torn ab muscle or a hernia. There is no sign of it being swollen or bruised but it seemed to have been caused after a number of sit ups. What do you suggest I do?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
With your present history- pain after sit-ups and increases with coughing and sneezing suggests me to of either the strain or hernia.
IS the pain pointed , meaning at a single spot or spread to the whole lower abdomen?
If you can pin-point to a single area like that of groin , it may be a hernia , being small in the beginning you may not see the bulge.
If the pain is in the center or around it in the lower abdomen , it is more likely due to strain.
A consultation with a Surgeon can help you the diagnosis; as also he may ask for ultrasonography to confirm the diagnosis as well as see the position of internal organs and fluid/ swelling or so.
It is more important to have a proper diagnosis so that the prognosis can be better with perfect treatment.
