What Causes Rise In Bilirubin Level While Having Jaundice?

Sir, I have jaundice since a month. Mytotal bilurubin was 1.7 at the first test with normal sgpt/sgot. After two weeks of rest and avoiding fried foods it went up to 3.3 ,with again normal sgpt/sgot. What i noted was the direct bilurubin remained static at 1 , while the indirect increased. Also during the second test ,the blood test was taken before breakfast, while i had eaten before my first test. Even after avoiding fried foods, taking juices and liquid diet why has my bilurubin increased? I am really worried, since the same episode happened 5 years back. And it took almost a year for the bilurubin to be normal(it remained between 2-3 for a year) . I feel hungry and fine, but thirsty most of the time. Apart from the thirst, i don t feel other symptoms like vomiting/lack of appetite.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Jaundice is characterized by increase in serum bilirubin levels.
Your lab reports suggest that there is increase in total bilirubin.
The normal level of total bilirubin id below 1.2 mg/dl.
The normal level of direct bilirubin is between 0-0.2 mg/dl.
Thus, your lab reports show that there is increase in direct bilirubin as well as indirect bilirubin.
Both direct and indirect bilirubin increase in conditions where is damage to liver cells and obstruction to flow of bilirubin.
Bilirubin flows from liver to duodenum via biliary channels.
Damage to liver cells is often accompanied by elevation of SGOT and SGPT.
Normal SGOT and SGPT rule out damage to liver cells.
Thus, there is possibility of obstruction of the biliary channels.
I suggest you to consult your physician for clinical assessment and relevant investigations of the hepato-biliary tract.

Thanks and take care
