What Causes Rib Cage Pain While Coughing?

had a car accident 8 days ago now my ribs hurt when I cough .I have a real bad cough in the mornings did I cough hard enough to hurt myself or could it be a after affect of the accident? my mom thinks it is my spleen since I had pain under my left rib cage before hand

FLOOOWING THE CAR ACCIDENT YOU HAD 8 DAYS BACK AND PAIN AND PRODUCTIVE COUGH THAT YOU ARE HAVING , YOU EITHER HAVE SUFFERED A BLUNT INJURY TO LT CHEST OR FRACTURED SOME OF LT RIBS.IN BOTH CASES YOU WILL HAVE PAIN ON DEEP BEREATHING/ COUGHING AND WHITISH MUCOID ,AT TIMES BLOOD STAINED SPUTUM.SPLEENIC INJURY IS MOST UNLIKELY SINCE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A CATASTROPHIC EVENT CHARACTERISED BY BLEEDING , ABDOMINAL DISTENSION AND SHOCK IN 48 HRSONLY. YOU SHOULD CONTINUE STEAM INHALATION AND DEEP BREATHING EXERCISES. X'RAY CHEST IS ADVISED AND PAIN KILLERS SHOULD BE TAKEN ,IF REQUIRED , UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION.

I can understand your concern.
I don't think your car accident and injury of 8 years back is causing you chest pain. It is unlikely.
Chest pain on coughing is seen in pleurisy (inflammation of the pleura).
And lung infection is the common cause for pleurisy.
So get done chest x ray to rule out lung infection. If x ray is normal then no need to worry much.
Excessive coughing can also cause musculoskeletal pain.
So avoid excessive coughing.
Apply warm water pad on affected site for pain relief.
