What Causes Red Tissue Sticking On The Gums After Removing Tooth?

My 13 yo daughter had a baby tooth that remained behind a permanent tooth. The dentist told her to wiggle, wiggle it. It fell out tonight but now there is red flesh hanging down where the tooth was. What is this? Will it go away n its own and, if so, how long will that take?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query your daughter had symptoms of red tissues sticking to gums after tooth removal is gum flap by which tooth remains anchored in oral cavity. When ever tooth erupts gingival flap dislodge along with that. You need not to worry about it. Its a normal occurrence.

I would suggest you to put thumb and finger pressure from both sides on the area of tooth removal to maintain gingival contouring as it will not disrupt permanent tooth alignment.

More so gingival tissue are very sensitive they need mild pressure for re-contouring otherwise child will become susceptible to gingivitis. Do warm saline gargles to prevent spared of infection.

Maintain basic oral hygiene by mild flossing and gentle brushing. Rinse mouth with antimicrobial mouth wash. If there is pain, give her Ibuprofen for pain control.

If gingival flap will not attain normal shape in one week visit periodontist once and get gingival flap reconstruction done.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain red tissue hanging after falling of a baby tooth can be a blood clot if some amount of bleeding happened during the falling of the tooth or it can be some torn tissue left when the tooth was fallen and need not worry about it..

You can take a piece of sterile cotton and dip it in saline and try to clean it off.. If it would be blood clot it will be cleaned off.

If it does not remove and there is pain on touching it then it must be mucosa or the gum tissue and for this you need to consult a paediatric dentist and get it evaluated so that the dentist can do the needful for letting it heal..

Hope this information helps..
