What Causes Recurring Tonsil Infection With Gum Infection?

My left tonsil is really inflated and the gum around my bottom left wisdom tooth wich is pushing out for months now is also inflated. Is this a sign of something that can be serious because this is like the fifth time this has happened in the past 5 months?

Hello and Welcome to Healthcaremagic.

I will try to the best of my ability to help you with your concern.

The symptom you mention in query is occurring due to pericoronitis that is inflammation of pericoronal flap . This occur when person bite gum flap on impacted wisdom tooth the flap become swollen and harness food debris and bacteria and get infected . When left untreated this infection can spread to the surroundings like tonsils .

I would suggest to :-

- Do warm saline rinses several times a day .

- Maintain proper oral hygiene specially area of wisdom tooth .

- Take advil for pain and swelling .

- Avoid eating from affected side .

The condition will resolve in 3-5 days with above treatment .

If condition persist for more then a week the consult oral surgeon for proper diagnosis .

Doctor may order X-ray to check the position of tooth ,That weather the tooth is impacted or not .

Doctor may clean the site with betadine for few days regularly , prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin) for at least 5 days or may extracted the impacted tooth to prevent the reoccurring.

I hope it helps.
Thanks
