What Causes Recurring Swelling And Numbness On Lips After Having Dental Implants?

I am having a dental implant and the first step (titanium screw) was placed on Tuesday...I have begun having some mild swelling of my upper lip, periodic itching/numbness of the lip and upper gum near front teeth. I am on amoxicillan and ibuprofen. I have RA and take minocycline for that but have stopped it while I am on Amoxicillan. It seems worse at times, then subsides and again becomes uncomfortable. I have no allergies that I know of.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms it seems that the implant placement has led to either nerve irritation leading to recurring episodes of numbness and itching/tingling..
As if it would be completely cutting of nerve the numbness would be persistent and does not keep on coming and going..

Swelling of lip is due to inflammation and it is a normal finding after any surgical procedure..
As you are already taking Ibuprofen the swelling will gradually subside..

I would suggest you to consult your Implantologist and get evaluated and in case if the implant screw is causing compression over the nerve then removal of the screw and placing a shorter length screw has to be done and gradually in 2 to 4 weeks the sensation will recover..

But if the nerve has got cut then chances of recovery are very less, almost negligible.

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
