What Causes Recurring Hives And Bruises?

I started out approx. 3-months ago after working in the yard, cleaning up after the mowing. In the morning I woke up with what I thought were chigger bites, treated with clear nail polish for a few weeks, then I started breaking out with a few hives, now & then. It has progressed to where I have them everywhere on my body, they start out in small red bites and end up in a huge whelp sometimes covering a large part of certain parts my body, then they turn almost like a bruise and then fade away. I went through the zantac 150mg & zynex.5 mg then 10mg treatment for awhile and that worked for only a short while, seemed to just quit working. Went to my regular MD and he prescribed levocetirizi 5mg tab. What a nightmare! I only took them for a few days due to the drowsiness and feeling disconnected. I am female age 60, Medical Conditions:hypertension, hypo thyroid, high cholesterol, taking crestor, levothrizine & Lisinopril. I am waiting for the blood test to return for a possible diagnosis. What do you think this is?

Hi dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are suffering from recurring hives and bruises. Well hives is the bodies reaction to the external stimuli as a allergic reaction .There can be many reasons for hives such environmental factors , cosmetic product or side effects of any medicine .
It is very important to find out what exactly causing hives or what factor is responsible for there occurrence , because treatment depends upon the causative factor . As such hives are harmless but when they start interfering in vital activities of life like breathing difficulty in your case then the condition become a kind of medical emergency . So i would suggest you to consult allergy specialist for proper diagnosis Doctor may prescribe other steroid cream, anti inflammatory drug or drugs that can suppress immune system. Doctor may perform skin test and challenge to find out the trigger factor. . The only treatment for hives is steroid therapy . Apply cold compresses to body for itchiness and redness . Your doctor may also alter the dose of medications you already taking or prescribe substitute .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
Best Wishes,
