What Causes Recurrent Strep Throat In A Toddler?

My 2 yr old grandson is frequently getting strept throat. He s had it 5 times in the last 7or 8 months, the most recent being only 3 weeks apart. He always finishes his round of antibiotics which was amoxicillin twice a day for 10 days. This last time he was prescribed azithromycin which is taken over 5 days. He now has been coughing a lot along with a little congestion and runny nose but no fever any more. Could the antibiotics be the cause of the other symptoms?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, my name is Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi. I understand your concern.
Treatment for strep throat consist in:
-antibiotics :antibiotics reduce the duration and severity of symptoms, as well as the risk of complications and the likelihood that infection will spread to others.Azithromycine is a very common antibiotic used to treat strep throat and do not give the side effects that you mentioned . It can give diarrhea, nausea or vomiting.
-To relieve throat pain and reduce fever, try pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others).
Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help, thanks!
