What Causes Recurrent Ear Infection In An Infant?

Hi there. The doctor said my 10 month old son had a ear infection 2 weeks ago and gave him something to clear up his nose and an antibiotic which is finished. He has been crying at night for the last 2 nights. Today i noticed white thickish stuff in his ear that goes all the way down to his ear drum. Could it be earwax or a reoccurence of an infection?
