What Causes Recurrent Blister On Penis Inspite Of Using Acyclovir?

35 y/o Male Recently diagnosed about 2 months ago with genital herpes due to a lesion or two on the shaft of my penis. Doc prescribed Zovorax... I think that was the name brand. Followed instructions. 10 days later it was gone. No sexual intercourse or break outs for approximately 2 months. Then my female partner and I had intercourse three days in a row. On the third day I noticed a tingling on the side of my shaft, which turned into 6-8 blister cluster about 3/4 in diameter. Was called in Acyclovir 800mg twice daily for 5 days. Blisters became lesions and went away after approximately 6 days. Intercourse that night and the next night, now 2 days later I have one tiny blister showing up! Is there a time limit from when the last lesion heals to when I can/should have sex again?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thanks for sharing your question with us on HCM.

There is no cure for genital herpes - many people suffer recurrent ulceration, sometimes lasting up to several years. Fortunately, each episode becomes less severe and shorter than the previous. The virus will remain in the body but each outbreak will become more manageable with medication and self care.

There are many triggers that can bring about an outbreak, including sexual intercourse. There is no fixed time limit - what you could do is use condoms and discuss daily suppressive therapy (usage of low dose acyclovir) taken everyday to prevent outbreaks.

The duration of suppressive therapy is still being debated - some patients take acyclovir daily for months. Suppressive therapy is recommended when there are more than 6 outbreaks in a year. Episodic treatment is what you are doing right now (treatment for each outbreak) - however episodic treatment will not reduce the frequency of outbreaks. Suppressive therapy will.

I do hope that your female partner is also being treated.

Take care and good luck,

Dr Shabnam
