What Causes Rawness On The Tongue With Swollen Taste Buds?

Hi. I recently had braces taken off and my permanent retainers put in on the top and bottom teeth. It has been three days and i have had trouble in trying not to rub the top of my tongue against them to get used to the sensation of them. I wasnt fully awaire i was doing it. The tip of my tongue is now very raw and a few of my tastebuds are large and swollen. I've been making more of a concerted effort not to run my tongue against them but my entire tongue feels a bit itchy as well and i was just wondering if all of this is normal and is there a way to numb the discomfort while i try to let my tongue heal?

Thanks for the query..

It looks like due to rubbing the tip of the tongue over the retainers that are made of wire glued over the inner side of teeth to retain the teeth in aligned position after removal of braces..

Due to continuous rubbing of the tip of the tongue that contains delicate mucosa there has been irritation and inflammation leading to Glossitis and due to inflammation only there is swelling of taste buds..

There is also a possibility that your tongue is hitting some sharp ares over the cement that is used to glue the wire as well as there is also a possibility that some sharp portion of wire is present that is injuring your tongue..

So once you can get it checked by your Orthodontist..

As of now you can apply Lignocaine gel over the tongue to relieve pain..
You can take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..
You can apply cool compresses or suck ice pops..
Avoid hot and spicy foods..
Try and avoid putting tongue against the retainers..
