I m a 70 year old female. I have what appears to be a rash on my ankles. It looks to have spread to the tops of my feet since yesterday. Today my feet look bruised on the top. I ve seen this rash looking thing on older people before but I never thought to ask what it was. It is not really a rash as it is not raised off the skin. I ve had this around my ankles for at least a year. I m worried because it appears to have spread. Thanks for any assistance, Ruth Gates
Hi, Welcome to HCM. Rash around ankle at your age should be properly evaluated. It's commonly due to iinflammation of small capillaries ( carries blood), called pigmented purpuric dermatoses(ppd) and venous stasis ( blood of bit larger calibre vessels get congested and leaks very slowly). It happens around ankle as connection between veins (perforators) are present mainly around ankle. These are mostly manageable if treated early. Few basic things you should follow like 1. Avoid prolong standing 2. Whenever you sit you can put your legs at horizontal level, may be over some desk or alike. Don't worry , consult a dermatologist who will guide you in proper way. Good luck.
