Hi dr. My heart beats loud mostly whenever I go to bed..sometime I wake up sleeping and find my heart beating very loud and fast and my pulse very fast as well..previously it used to happen only whenever I had constipation, gas and stomach upset. But a month ago a series of bad incidents happend in my life which made it quite frequent..I believe my BP is in control but my heart start beating loud..which is not letting me sleep ..should I be taking indral (pronolol) every time when my heart is beating loud? Isn t it harmful to take it regularly? I m 31 years old and have long history of stomach problem

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Rapid heart beat and rapid pulse is called palpitation.
Palpitation can occur due to various reasons.
Anxiety is a common cause of palpitations.
Your history suggests that palpitations in your case are associated with anxiety like during constipation and during bad incidents in life.
A beta blocker or pronolol will help to control the palpitations, however, long term use is not advisable since it can be harmful.
An organic cause is unlikely but still I suggest you to get a cardiac examination to rule out any organic disorder.
For prevention of similar episodes in future, stress management and relaxation techniques should be practiced.

Thanks and take care
