What Causes Random Headache And Loss Of Sensation Below The Knees?

I was involved in a car accident in 2-14-14 where the driver died instantly and I was able to walk without a scratch. But after a few days I began to notice a difference in my body. I feel random headaches , from my knees down I have no sensation, my neck hurts when I look up, I m starting to lose my posture I get tire now if I try to keep a straight posture which is something that didn t happen before, and also my abdomen it feels like my belly is lose I noticed that when I flex my abdomen I goes back in. Any clue of what s happening?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. I am to sorry to hear about your dangerous accident. But it is good that you are conscious and oriented.

Your complaints of sensory loss below both knees, headache, neck pain could be due to spine injury causing compression over spinal cord and nerves. Now to reach upto some conclusion, we need to relate your features like
: Neck pain - If it is in midline over back of neck, tender on pressing, causing sharp shooting pain which is radiating to limbs, sudden pain on coughing/sneezing, then it seems that you are having cervical spine injury.

It could be due to missed fracture of vertebra which might have caused cord compression due to displacement as a result of neck movement.

For management, you should avoid neck movement, apply hard neck collar and consult doctor as soon as possible. The doctor might advise X ray, CT and MRI of cervical spine to find fracture, cord and nerve status. Further management will be decided after reports.

: Thoraco-lumbar spine injury - It is another possibility. It means injury of spine in back. It can be suspected if above features are present in back and pain radiates to lower limbs.

Management is similar to cervical spine. For immobilisation of spine, you can use thoracic-lumbar corset, avoid back movement, avoid lifting weight.

: Post traumatic stress disorder - It can be suspected only if no actual lesion is identified by clinical examination and investigation. It can be confirmed by psychiatrist. It usually occurs after major accidents and manifest within 6 months. It can cause anxiety, nightmares, loss of interest, poor concentration, depression, unexplained pain symptoms.

For treatment, you should seek family support, avoid mental and physical stress, divert attention by indulging in some fun activity, take vacation, you can consult psychiatrist for help.

Hope it will help you. If still no relief, consult doctor.

Thanks. Take care.
