What Causes Prolonged Vaginal Bleeding Post Abortion?

I had an abortion at 6 weeks. I did the medical abortion. I ve been bleeding 9 weeks on and off very heavy mostly. Pain and clots and bleeding for the first month. After the pain stopped around 7 weeks I thought it was over. 3 days later bled terribly for a week. Then 2 days no blood no symptoms. Ofcorse when I told my partner the bleeding had stopped it came pouring out while sitting on the toilet. Like it never stopped. The texture of my vagina was almost back to normal and then I started again. 9 weeks after medical abortion I m still bleeding just as heavy as when i took the actual pills to do all this. I ve had two check up appointments and everything is fine. The nurses are sick of me calling and calling about the bleeding. I ve been eating good and taking vitimans. But no matter what I do I just bleed and bleed. I can t go on this way. I don t know where to turn. Please help.

Hallow Dear,

Post abortion bleeding for 9 weeks should be taken rather seriously. If the abortion is complete, the bleeding should stop within few days. Such continued bleeding may be mainly due to:

1. Incomplete abortion: By ultrasonography, you will get to know whether your abortion is complete or some part of products of conception is still left in the uterine cavity. In that case, you would probably notice some fleshy whitish tissue passing through the bleeding. Please preserve all the pads to show to the Gynaecologist. If so, you will have to undergo surgical evacuation of the uterus.

2. Infection: Usually is contacted in incomplete abortion or unhygienic practises after abortion. This would cause fever and foul smelling vaginal discharge. Since you have not mentioned it, this possibility seems to be less likely. If present, will have to be treated by antibiotics.

3. Molar pregnancy: In this condition, the tissue of baby has undergone molar changes. It may cause a cancer called as Choriocarcinoma. This cancer spreads through blood to distant organs like lungs also. Please get your Beta hCG levels done. In Choriocarcinoma they are very high - more than 100000. Though it is wide spreading condition, if diagnosed in time can very easily and completely be treated and cured by medicines like Methotrexate.

What ever is the cause, you are loosing your blood. So get your blood examined which will reflect upon the severity of the bleeding. Also, start taking iron pills to cover the bleeding.

Please do not delay and get Beta hCG levels and ultrasonography done and report to the Gynaecologist ASAP. If the nurses are not entertaining you, please contact the Gynaecologist directly.

I hope you will take prompt steps for further management.
