What Causes Prolonged Vaginal Bleeding And Abdominal Cramps While On Contraceptive Pills?

Hi, I took a break from the pill for a couple of months. I have now been back on it for over two months. My period has not stopped for the past four weeks. In the first week, my period was extremely heavy like I have not experienced before on the pill and then it decreased to a smaller flow. However, it still hasn t stopped . As of the last couple of days it has started getting heavy again. I have had breaks from the pill over the last 15 years and have never experienced this before. I haven t changed the brand of pill. I am also experiencing period pain over the four weeks. The colour of the period has also changed from bright red to a dark almost brown/black colour. I am worried there is something else going on. I am 37 years old and haven t had children. Should I go and see my doctor? Rebecca

Dear Rebecca,

I can understand your concern. However, there are multiple reasons that can cause the symptoms you are describing. You might be suffering from premature menopause, hormonal imbalance of polycystic ovaries, some structural abnormality/damage/infection of the uterus or ovaries.

I would advise you to visit your gynecologist for physical examination and get ultrasonography and blood tests to determine hormonal level and rule out cystic lesions or endometriosis like conditions.

After specific diagnosis, the gynecologist may prescribe you medicines to control the condition. You might have to take Tranexamic acid tablets to control the prolonged menstruation. In addition, iron supplements may be needed to replenish the lost iron in menstrual blood. Take healthy energy-rich diet to remain energized as prolonged menstruation takes its toll on body.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic with your problem. I wish you speedy recovery.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
