What Causes Prolonged Periods With Spotty To Heavy And Bleeding Almost Black?

I have been tracking my cycle for six months. (Started sept). Went off the pill in oct. Tried to actively conceive in January. Stopped in feb. the last time we had unprotected attempting to conceive sex was jan. 18. That was a complete cycle prior and then I had this two plus week period. three+ weeks ago I got a heavy cold and then my period started late. Two and a half weeks later still having my period. Normally it is between 3-5 days and moderate. This has been heavy to spotty to dark and almost black verses bright red. Three days ago I got food poisoning. I'm terrified I have ovarian cysts or cancer or something else. My last Pap smear was oct 2012. I was told I had hpv in 2005 but it has never come back up again. I don't know if this is just an abnormal month, if my illnesses had an effect on my cycle, or if there is something more serious. I currently go to my women's Heath physician. She does my annual check up. I have an apt with a new obgyn in late march. What is going on?

Hi,
In the current scenario, if you have not excluded pregnancy so far, please do it immediately. If pregnancy can be excluded, you could be suffering from hormonal imbalance and this could be due to several reasons like general illness, stress, sudden weight disturbances, certain medications etc. I would ask you to get a proper evaluation with a specialist along with a trans-vaginal sonogram, complete hormonal profile, blood counts and urinalysis. You may need styptics to arrest the bleeding and hormones if further necessary. Hope this helps.
