What Causes Prolonged Periods With Blood Clots While On Provera?

Let me give you some history on my condition before I move on. I have PCOS and I had my period for 2 1/2 months straight. I went to an obgyn & he prescribed provera since I decided not to go on birth control. I started taking the provera on June 29 and after 4 days my period came back heavier than before. I also had blood clots coming out every 30-40 mins. Well after all of the blood I lost I was anemic my blood levels dropped to 6 so I went to ICU & got a blood transfusion on July 15. It s been 2 1/2 weeks and my period is back with blood clots. Should I go back to the emergency room or wait until I feel sick again like before?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. I have gone through your query and understood the concern. In the current scenario, I would ask you to see the specialist as soon as possible without waiting for deterioration of the clinical condition. Styptics, hormone supplements, nutritional supplements, management of weight and stress, all go into the treatment.

Coagulation profile, blood counts and urinalysis should be done along with a sonogram of the pelvis. Local causes like polyps, erosions and infection should be treated.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shanti Vennam
