What Causes Pregnancy Symptoms Before A Menstrual Period?

Yes, last month I had a 3day period which is not normal for me & I find it awkward because my periods normally last 4-5 days. When my period came is was 2 days after I had sex we used a condom but sometimes my partner be ripping the tip off. Now I'm expecting my period for this month on the 23rd. But I recently started getting some pregnancy symptoms like breast tenderness & they swollen the areolas got bigger & darker, lower abdominal cramping, nausea, frequent urination, abdomonal bloatedness, & I gained weight in a short period of time. I don't know what to do but I do need advice asap because if I am pregnant I need to know how far I am.

Hi there,
After reading your query, my opinion is that:
1) There is very rare chance of pregnancy when there is intercourse 2 days before periods.
2) The symptoms that you are having might be due to PMS i.e. pre menstrual syndrome. This syndrome occurs before menstrual periods and can cause breast tenderness, bloating, cramping, nausea and mood swings as well as food cravings. It occurs because of hormonal changes similar to pregnancy so resemble pregnancy symptoms.
3) It is too soon to say whether you are pregnant or not.
4) You must wait for atleast 2 days after a missed period and get your urine pregnancy test done.
5) There is a blood test called serum beta HCG which gives a positive result sooner.
6) To know how far along you are, you would need to get a pelvic ultrasound done, but it is not recommended to get it done before 4 weeks.

Hope this was helpful.
Regards,
Dr. Shikha Shah
