What Causes Persistent Vaginal Bleeding Along With Pelvic Pain?

I am a 46-year-old female. I have been bleeding for about 3 months and have severe pelvic pain. OBGYN put me on birth control pills. I still bleed every day and am in pain constantly. I have called the doctor and they say to give it (the pills) time. What do you think?
