What Causes Persistent Non Productive Cough While On Multiple Medications?

I have a deep hacking non-productive cough. I see several doctors for various reasons: ESRD, CLL-0 and a couple of others, which results in about 13 scripts. Chest x-ray and sinus CT scan are negatiove. Several docs think that it might be a side effect of so many meds, but can t say which is the most likely suspect Any thoughts? Thanks. Hi,

There are some medications that can cause coughing such as ACE inhibitors that is Ramipril, Lisinopril, and Enalapril. These are used for heart disease, high blood pressure or to protect the kidneys in diabetics.

If you are using an ACE inhibitor, it could definitely be the cause of the coughing. Other than medications, the other common reasons for chronic or persistent coughing are:

(1) post nasal drip- this is the most common cause, persons may not be aware of the drip itself and only present with the cough. Treatment is with decongestants and antihistamines such as Zyrtec D, Allegra D, Claritine D, Benadryl D

(2) GERD reflux is also a common cause as well

(3) Asthma

(4) Non asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis - the presence of IgE (part of the body's immune reaction) in the airways, associated with coughing

Treated with a short course of inhaled steroidsYou may want to consider seeing a pulmonologist (doctor who deals with the airways) for assessment.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
