What Causes Persistent Hard Swelling Of Salivary Gland?

My wife, 58 years of age, has swelling of the salivary gland below the ear, as in mumps. It started one side;cghs dr prescribed an antibiotic (cifran); the swelling subsided and disappeared in about a week; then it started on the other side around March 7th; she is now on augmentin 625 and combiflex for a few 2 days; unlike usual mumps which passes in a week, the swelling is still there and is painful. The swollen region is hard and hot to touch. Wonder if surgery is warranted. Incidentally, she is a diabetic and is on bezathine penicillin once in 3 weeks for 15 years now for suspected RHD. Will be thankful for advising the right hospital

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns.

As per your complain swelling of the salivary gland below the ear that occurred on one side and subsided in a week but occurred on other side seems to be due to bacterial infection in the glands and not Mumps that is a viral infection..
You should consult an Oral Physician or an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and he can do a proper clinical evaluation and also evaluated you oral cavity and teeth as swollen gum flap over the wisdom tooth can also cause swelling under the ear..
He can also advise you MRI of glands, x ray of wisdom teeth, blood tests, saliva culture and salivary amylase levels depending on suspected cause to rule out whether it is bacterial or viral infection or dental problem..
Treatment can be planned once diagnosis is confirmed...
As of now continue taking augmentin and combiflam and do cool compresses over swelling..
Drink plenty of water and take soft diet..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
