What Causes Persistent Dry Cough And Fatigue In Spite Of Taking Delsym?

I have been coughing for a week now - It started with a scratchy throught, then progressed into lethargy and lots of deep unproductive coughing - never a runny nose, sneezing, or anything like that. It s a dry cough for the most part with pockets of phlegm releasing from time to time. I also experience a constant nagging headache. Last Sat/Sun I took mucunex dm, no results. Last Monday I started taking alkaselzer cold plus which resulted in one good blow of discolored mucus. Thought I was feeling better, but finished the package as of Thursday night. Lethargy and deep cough remain, often waking me up at night, making it difficult to get anything done or disturbing others around me. Since Thursday I have been taking Delsym cold/cough but it doesn t help either. I don t know what else to do. My rib cage, neck, throat, and head hurt from coughing so much and so hard. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Now my husband has begun having the same symptoms.

Hi Dear,

welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of persistent dry cough and fatigue in spite of taking Delsym which seems to be due to upper respiratory tract infection/ bronchitis and due to acid reflux disease or gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD). Need not to worry. You should avoid cold carbonated beverages. Consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may order endoscopy test , ambulatory probe tests and X-ray of digestive system. Doctor may prescribe antacids to neutralize acid, H2 blocker (ranitidine ) to prevent acid production and proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole). You should keep your head elevated while sleeping keep clove in mouth to suppress cough and do warm saline gargles. Apply mist humidifiers in room. I would suggest you to avoid spicy and heavy meal, avoid late night eating , eat at least 1- 1.5 hours before going to bed and take frequent and small meals.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
