What Causes Persistent Abscess In Jaw And Bleeding In Nose?

Hi, I have an abscess on the last molar on the upper right side. I have taken two rounds of antibiotics and am waiting for an endodontist to extract the tooth. Meanwhile I am still having pretty bad pain, swelling, ear and throat pains and frequent headaches. Today I had a bloody nose. Do you think I need another round if antibiotics? Shouldn t the first two rounds of them cleared up the pain and swelling? What do you think is causing the nosebleed? Thx.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain the roots of upper molars are in close contact with the lining of maxillary sinus and at times the root of the tooth can be present inside the sinus.

In case when the tooth is infected leading to formation pus formation thereby creating the abscess can lead to infection in the sinus as any of the root of the infected tooth may lay in close contact with the sinus or inside the sinus..

If the sinus gets infected it can lead to symptoms of sinusitis as well as blood discharge from the nose..

But if you had just one episode of nose bleeding it is not necessarily due to abscessed tooth and can be due to a general injury to any minor blood vessel of nose leading to bleeding.

I would suggest you to consult your dentist and get evaluated as the dentist can take x rays preferably Orthopantomogram (OPG) which shows teeth as well as sinuses and helps in evaluating the cause of nose bleeding..

If dental problem is the cause, treatment of dental issue followed by antibiotics can help in relieving.

But in case nose bleeding is not due to dental abscess you can wait and watch for the further episodes of nose bleed and if it happens you can consult an ENT expert..

Hope your query is solved..

Thanks and regards..
