What Causes Periodic Headaches?

I have periodic stabbing headaches. It feels as if someone were stabbing me with an ice pick in one location about 4 to 5 times and then quit for 10 seconds or so then again. This may go on for hours or days. The next episode may be days, weeks, or months later and in a different location. Darkness and silence are necessary but do not ease the pain. I would like to know what these are called and if there is a control as aspirin or similar otc drugs don t seem to help.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have periodic headaches. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like migraine , cluster headache , sinusitis , tumor , high blood pressure or allergic reaction . I recommend consulting with your neurologist and performing a complete blood count, a sinus X ray study to examine for possible sinus infection along with CT scan and MRI. A sinus discharge bacterial culture may be needed to establish the cause and the proper therapy. Doctor may prescribe vasograin , berablockers , immunosuppressants or may recommend surgery in case of tumor .
