What Causes Painful Redness And Swelling Of Paralyzed Leg?

My husband is 70, an insulin dependent diabetic for 30 years, morbidly obese (approx. 23 stone) and paralysed down his left side as the result of a devastating stroke. Since moving to the East Midlands 7 years ago I am sorry to say that the local GPs are so indifferent to his problems that we have had manage on our own and no longer ask them for assistance. His left leg – the paralysed leg is extremely painful, swollen, red & shiny. The skin is very fragile and I am afraid that it will breakdown and develop into ulcers. I lift and move his leg many times a day which does relieve the symptoms but of course they return again when his leg is lowered. It is difficult for him to sit with his legs raised as he suffers greatly with pain in his coccyx and sore skin on his bottom. Is there anything you could advise me to do or equipment I could buy that would assist him?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thank you for asking us on HCM!

Since your husband is diabetic is at higher risks to develop artery and vein problems, infection, open wounds etc. By the symptoms you describe it may be vein thrombosis, or blocked lymphatic drainage. So the best thing is to go to your Healthcare center to get assistance by a specialist.

Take care and I hope you will be fine soon!
