What Causes Pain While Coughing?

I am 36 years old. I smoke and have had a lot of allergy problems in the last few months. For the past month I have a pain in my right near center chest when I breathe deep or cough. The last week or two I have a consistent burning under my sternum area. I have woke up twice having to take an inhaler because I could not catch my breath. My insurance is not the best and really do not need to have another bill. Is there anything I can do on my own to fix this.

Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
By your history and description of pain, possibility of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is more.
Smoking is the biggest risk factor for GERD. So quit smoking as soon as possible.
Allergy can also precipitate reflux.
So better to consult doctor and start anti allergic drugs.
For reflux, try to follow these steps for better symptomatic relief.
1. Avoid stress and tension.
2. Avoid hot and spicy food. Avoid large meals, instead take frequent small meals.
3. Start proton pump inhibitors and prokinetic drugs.
4. Go for walk after meals.
5. Keep 2-3 pillows under head in the bed to prevent reflux.
Don't worry, you will be alright by all these home remedies.
But first of all quit smoking as soon as possible.
Wish you good health. Thanks.
