What Causes Pain On The Right Side Of Belly Button?

My husband has been having pain right on his belly button for the past 3 or 4 months. He says that when the pain occurs it is very tender and sore right on top of his belly button and no where else. He also said that since these pains have come along that his belly button has bulged out (not like and outie belly button). It's looks flat and smoothe I guess you could say. He is not having any of the symptoms that come along with the "Appendicitis" or the "peritonitis". He is 49 years old. His height is 5'10", his weight is 249lb. My husband does smoke, I'm really not sure how much he does. I know when he's home he slows down, but when he's at work I'm not sure if he smokes a lot more or what. Do you have any idea what could be wrong with him? or what he needs to do as far as seeing the doctor? Thanks.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query. If I were your doctor, I would do a clinical examination of his abdomen to rule out an umbilical hernia which would cause such symptoms. As he is a smoker as told by you, he might be coughing frequently resulting in the increased intra abdominal pressure precipitating the development of a hernia. To rule out a hernia needs a clinical examination, and so I would advise you to get him assessed by a general surgeon who could then advise him on further management.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
