What Causes Pain In The Heel?

For the past five days I ve had a bad pain in the left heel...the inside rear of the heel. It seems to be really bad in the morning and at night, when I m barefoot. I should tell you I m a former dance major and have been active as a dancer and dance teacher for most of my life. I don t remember having injured my foot, so I have no idea what this is.
