What Causes Pain In The Groin Radiating Down The Leg?

I have had pain in my right groin which radiates down my leg and then sometimes around my leg - for a number of months now. I went to a chiropractor who took an X-ray and said he felt he was the piriformis muscle. I am an active 70 yr old who is moving daily. I have been doing recommended exercises but have seen no improvement. Lifting my left, rotating it outward at the knee are some movements that really ittitate it.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have pain in the groin radiating down the leg . Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to may reasons , but in your case t seems to me that the symptoms are due to Sciatica . Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg . Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, usually by a herniated disk in your spine or by an overgrowth of bone . I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor will take history and order CT scan, x-ray and MRI . Doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatories ,muscle relaxants and tricyclic antidepressants . Doctor may also recommend physical therapy or steroid injection . For now apply warm compresses to lower back and leg and take proper rest . Doctor may also refer you to neurologist for nerve problem.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
