What Causes Pain In The Ankles?

I have a pain below my ankle bone on the inside of my foot. This has bothered me off and on for a little over a year. It will hurt really bad then suddenly it is better and no pain, then suddenly it is hurting again. Went to my primary care doctor and they didn t take x ray but gave me a gel to put on and that didn t help. I do zumba and line dancing, what could be causing this pain?

Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
If you have ankle pain and no swelling and no redness but just pain that comes and goes and no pain in other joints this makes it very likely to be due to overuse, which is joint pain due to overusing it- dancing might be a cause of it. You will need to have physiotherapy to strengthen muscles which will help to keep the joint strong. Make sure you have warming up exercises for your feet before dancing. Also using a bandage on the area during the time you dance (or at activities) and remove it at rest might give more support to the joint and help. Pain killers are recommended to be used as needed.
If you have redness and swelling to the area or you have pain in other joints also than this speaks more for inflammatory cause of pain which is arthritis and you will need to see a doctor to decide on diagnosis and the needed tests and treatment.
Hope this is helpful and answers to your question.
